Bagenalstown Parish Website News for February 2015 by Margaret Cushen

March 11th, 2015 by Margaret Cushen

Singer/Songwriter Derek Ryan scooped two awards at the recent Sunday World 2015 Music Awards function in City West Hotel, Dublin.  Derek received the Entertainer of the Year Award and also Album of the Year Award for his album The Simple Things, which reached No. 1 in Ireland ahead of a number of top Irish and international artists.

St. Andrews G.A.A. Club

The 63rd.Annual General Meeting of the club was held in the McGrath Memorial Hall on Friday, Jan 23. This, coincidentally, was also the same venue where the club’s very first AGM was held on Jan. 13, 1952. It was at that meeting the decision to form a club under the parochial banner of St. Andrew’s was taken and implemented.

It had been generally acknowledged that in years 2012/2013 the club had lost momentum and was not making the necessary contribution and resultant progress to ensure that it played its part in the promotion of Gaelic games in Bagenalstown. To address this situation detailed plans were agreed for a renewal of activities, both on and off the field, at the beginning of 2014. Friday’s meeting was an occasion to examine and assess what goals were actually achieved from that plan during the year just passed.  All the officers’ reports, speakers and discussions reflected, not in any triumphalist or self serving way, that momentum had been restored, that a satisfactory number of the goals set out had been attained and good solid progress had been achieved in all the club’s activities. This has resulted in more solid foundations being laid, on which further progress can be made during 2015. Great credit was expressed to the manner in which all players across all grades had responded to training and game participation. Without doubt they played a great part in bringing a number of initial and heartening levels of success and restored some badly needed pride. What is needed now is a renewed belief and continuation of that mindset during 2015. The town has shown that it has the talent, the facilities and the off the field backup to make further solid progress this coming year.

The contribution of the ladies involved during the year came in for special praise. The club also expressed its gratitude for the support it received at matches, the public’s contribution to various fundraising projects and the greatly appreciated help from fundraisers, an activity which must rank as the most unenviable of all club tasks. To continue the progress made, the meeting proceeded to elect its officers and committee for the coming year -  Honorary Life President Michael Jones; Vice Presidents John Comer ford, Jack Kelly, Denis Foley and Michael Kelly (Green Road); Chairman Liam Barry; Vice  Chairman and P.R.O. Aidan Coburn; Secretary and County Board Delegate George Darcy; Asst. Secretary Ann Hickey; Treasurer Vinnie Lambed.  .Committee The officers plus Seamus Foley, Con Hourihane, Nicky Gordon ,Michael Crowe, Cathal McSteen, Cathal Cole, Paddy Kiely, Hamish Beaton, Denis Foley, Ken Hickey, Morgan Drea, Paddy Gardiner and Justin Manning. The meeting concluded by expressing good wishes for 2015 to all units of the G.A.A. in town i.e. the Juveniles, Erin’s Own Camogie, Ladies Football and last, but not least, the town’s most successful unit, the Ladies Rounders.

Surprise Surprise

When Amy Hutchinson arrived at Doyle’s Railway House one evening recently she was in for a big surprise.  Amy had planned to meet a friend for a social evening in Doyle’s and was completely unaware of what was to come.  Her boyfriend, John (Doc) Dermody, had arranged for family and friends to gather in the function room, musicians to serenade her and an engagement ring to put on her finger. When shouts of “Here she comes” rang out, the lights were dimmed, the groom to-be nervously paced the floor and when Amy came through the door she was greeted by loud applause.  Losing no time John swung into action..got down on one knee, produced a beautiful engagement ring and asked her to be his partner for life    A simple very romantic marriage proposal, followed by a night of celebrations

John and Amy met in Doyle’s two and a half years ago at the

farewell party for Fr. Paddy Byrne, and they have been inseparable since. John is a very popular much- in- demand D.J. and Amy is a hairdresser.  We wish them a future filled with love, happiness and good health.

Congratulations to recipients of Gold Gaisce Awards

It was a proud moment for the 1st Bagenalstown Baden Powell Scout Troop when two Troop Leaders, Barry Brennan and Tommy Monahan, were presented with Gold Gaisce Awards by President Michael D. Higgins at a very special ceremony in Dublin Castle recently.  As the two Scout Leaders went forward in their full Scout uniforms to receive their awards it was the culmination of many years of commitment and dedication on their part and is a well deserved and fitting accolade indeed.  They are a credit to their Troop, their community and to their families and are fantastic ambassadors for the Scout Movement.

He is a former pupil of St. Lazerian’s School in Carlow and works in Beam Services, Bagenalstown.  Barry is an accomplished Special Olympics athlete and has competed at the very highest level on many occasions.  Tommy is the son of Michael and Mary Monahan, Old Leighlin and he is a past pupil of Old Leighlin N.S. and Presentation De La Salle College, Bagenalstown, where he was elected Head Boy in his final year. Celebrating 25 years Carlow/Kilkenny Home Care

Bagenalstown Branch will celebrate 25 years of the

Home Care Team Service on Mon. Feb. 23 at 8.30pm in Doyle’s Railway House.  Everybody very welcome.  Mr. Ian Wilson, Chairman of Carlow/Kilkenny Home Care Team will

attend and the Bagenalstown branch will present him with the proceeds of the 22nd Christmas Day Swim/Walk which is organised by Mary Foster who has been  heavily involved in voluntary work in the community for many years.

Twenty two years ago Mary lost a very dear friend, Vera Power, to cancer.  Before she died Vera had been cared for at home by her family and the wonderful palliative care nurses in the Home Care Team.  She asked Mary to start a fundraising activity to help the Home Care nurses to continue their very valuable work, caring for the terminally ill in their homes.  At that time Mary decided, with the help and encouragement of Vera’s husband, Bill and his family, and Mary’s late husband, John, to organise a sponsored Swim/Walk on Christmas Day, which has grown every year.

Over the last 22 years the Swim/Walk has raised over €200,000 for the Home Care Team.  The dedicated members of the Bagenalstown Branch of the Carlow/Kilkenny Home Care Team are helping to maintain this very important service which has been of invaluable help to terminally ill patients and their families.

Thank You from Bagenalstown Country Market

It is with regret that the Country Markets committee announces the closure of Bagenalstown Country Market and they would like to take this opportunity to thank all their customers and supporters throughout the years and the many members who baked, produced chickens, supplied eggs, butter, buttermilk, etc.

It is over 40 years since the Country Market set out its stall in the Market Square and in spite of all their location moves, which ended in St. Mary’s Hall, Church Road, their loyal supporters followed them. Thanks also to St. Mary’s Hall Committee for their support which is greatly appreciated.

The Market will close on Saturday, March 7, 2015 and the committee hope that in the future some enterprising young people will take up the enterprise where they left off.  Very many thanks to all of you from Bagenalstown Country Market.
