JULY

Pitch and Putt

Congratulations to Darren McNally, a member of Bagenalstown Pitch and Putt Club who finished third at the Leinster Championships held in Inniskeen, Co. Monaghan, recently.  Darren represented the club in the junior grade at the Leinster Handicap Stroke Play Championships. He has continued the club’s success in Leinster and National championships over the last number of years.   Well done also to Roy O’Neill who also represented the club in Inniskeen, competing in the Intermediate grade.

County won the U-14 Camogie Blitz

Congratulations to County Carlow U-14 Camogie team who won the South Leinster Inter County Carlow Development blitz on Sat. July 19. The girls beat Kildare, Laois and Wicklow to win.  Five young members of Muine Bheag U-14 Camogie Club play with the county team  Ali Cushen (Captain on the day),  Emma Byrne, Roisin Meaney, Maeve Lawless and Molly O’Dwyer.  Ali Cushen was presented with the trophy by Liam Foley, Carlow Camogie Chairperson on behalf of Carlow County Camogie Board.

Annual Barrow Swims

The annual Half Mile Swim on the river Barrow took place on Wed. evening July 23 and a large number of swimmers took part.  There are three trophies for the winners, the Chicago Cup (women’s prize) was donated in l957 by Bagenalstown people who had built a successful life in Chicago; the Corr Trophy for women (donated by Brother Corr, an uncle of Mary Foster) and the Appleby Cup (donated in memory of Joe Appleby who made an enormous contribution to swimming in the town)..  The Chicago Cup has now been retired and replaced by “Trasna na dTonnta” the Emigrants’ Trophy, which was generously donated by the following natives of Bagenalstown, now living abroad. AUGUST 2014

Welcome Home 1st Bagenalstown

The contingent of Scouts, Senior Scouts and Leaders from the 1st Bagenalstown Baden Powell Scout Troop have returned from their adventures on Camp 2014 in France.   Among the many highlights of the Camp were visits to Omaha Beach, the American Military Cemetery, Mont St. Michel, St. Malo and the Senior Scouts visit to Utah Beach. The Senior Scouts hiked along the route from Utah Beach taken by the Allied Forces on the days after D Day and gained a unique insight into what it would have been like for the soldiers involved.

Parish Year Book

The deadline is fast approaching for the absolute deadline for contributions to the Bagenalstown Year Book. Personal contributions are most welcome and all groups, clubs and organisations within the parish are invited to submit a report of their activities.  This is free of charge and an excellent forum in which to present news and activities to the local community and wider diaspora.

St. Andrew’s Ladies U-16 Football Team

The St. Andrew’s Ladies U-16 Football Team won the County 7 a side title recently in Leighlinbridge.  Well done to team mentors Ann, Vinny and Ken.   Team: Gráinne Hickey, Ciara Foley, Megan 0′ Dwyer(captain), Molly 0′Dwyer, Catilín 0′ Neill, Leona Lee, Orla Bolger, Roisin Meaney, Ali Cushen,

SEPTEMBER

Fenagh Improvement Update

Councillor Willie Quinn has volunteered to assist F.I.G. in drawing up a 5 year plan for the village and community. F.I.G. is looking for any suggestions or innovative ideas on how to improve, develop, enhance or promote their r community for the future.. The TUS workers John Brennan, Noel Ryan and Ollie Kearns are doing great work on the Carlow Fence and are completing the final section of the project at present. .

Erin’s Own Hurling Club

The junior hurlers recently brought home the first silverware of the season.  This was a superb team performance against a spirited Naomh Brid side and was the first time since l997 that the junior title was won by Erin’s Own, a gap of 17 years.

All Ireland Senior Rounders Champions.

Bagenalstown Rounders recently won the Senior Ladies All Ireland Final where their opponents were Erne Eagles from Cavan. Congratulations to the team members for bringing the title home to Bagenalstown. This is the 5th All Ireland Senior Ladies title for the girls. .

All Star Awards

Congratulations to Bagenalstown Rounders club and the four girls that received All Star Awards recently.  Sarah Foley, Angela O’Rourke, Nicola Clarke and Elaine Clarke.

Derek Goes Global

Congratulations to Garryhill native, Derek Ryan, who is flying high on the country and western music scene, both at home and

erek has had a very busy year, packed full of touring in Ireland, the U.K, television and radio appearances and a number of hit singles.  Derek and his band have completed very successful tour of Australia, His family is very musically talented – his father, Pat, recently celebrated thirty years as a member of Cupla and his older brother, Aidan, is also a musician.  .

OCTOBER

Student  Bursary Award

Congratulations To Niamh Fahy, Rathellen, Leighlinbridge, who is the winner of Bagenalstown Credit Union Student Bursary for 2013. Niamh is studying Applied Languages at DCU.
Red Devils

Bagenalstown Red Devils (Manchester United Supporters Club) was founded in 2007 when 98 Man. United supporters turned up for the inaugural meeting. Membership grew very quickly and in 2009 the Red Devils were recognised by Old Trafford. .

Ken Hickey appointed Manager.

Ken Hickey has been appointed Carlow Minor Football Manager. He comes from a family that has been linked to the G.A.A. for generations. Ken was a very active and committed selector some years ago when the Carlow Minor Football team became the first minor team from the county to reach a Leinster Final and an All Ireland Minor Quarter Final. .

NOVEMBEER

Text Alert AGM

Bagenalstown Parish Community Text Service has completed its first year. At the recent AGM an appreciative audience heard Garda Sergeant Martin O’Halloran report that this last year had been one of the quietest and crime free years for some time. “I have no doubt that the Text Alert has been a deterrent to criminals and we in the Gardai appreciate it and see it as a vital part of our fight against crime”. There are now over 700 subscribers in Bagenalstown, Fenagh and surrounding areas. The annual subscription is €10. Forms and a collection box are in the Credit Union.

Nicky Gordon raised €742 for the Injured Jockeys Fund when he ran the Dublin City Marathon recently. . .

Good news for Woodglade, Fenagh

Cllr. Tommy Kinsella has announced that funding has been made available by Carlow County Council to install 12 new lights outside Woodglade housing estate, Fenagh.  These lights will be erected outside the perimeter of the fence in the estate, opposite the GAA pitch.  This information was made available by Area Engineer, Ray Wickham, at a recent meeting of Muine Municipal Area.

DECEMBER

Manager Martin Kelly to stay on

Erin’s Own are happy to announce that Martin Kelly has agreed to remain on as Manager of their senior hurlers for 2015 and wish him, the players and all involved in the club’s activities best of luck in 2015 as they set out to build on the progress made in 2014.  Congratulations to two of the club’s senior players, Craig Doyle and Alan Corcoran, who were honoured recently when the Hurling Team of the Year was announced. Both Craig and Alan were by far the two outstanding players of this year’s Championship. .

Sinead Wins Top Award

Congratulations to Sinead Hourihane, Maple Drive, Bagenalstown, who works as a stylist at Lynda Maher’s Hair Studio, in Carlow.  At the Irish Hairdressers Federation Night of Legends. Sinead competed against over 300 applicants from all Ireland to make it onto the Federation’s Star Team 2014. The 300 applicants were then narrowed down to only 15 finalists, including Sinead.  She won one of four places on the Star Team, which was a wonderful achievement for her and the rest of Lynda Maher’s team.

This prestigious victory means that Sinead will receive €20,000 worth of free education for the year, along with many hair shows and photo sheets to showcase her talent.  Sinead, who is a past pupil of Presentation De La Salle College, Bagenalstown, is the first person from Carlow to qualify for the IHF Star Team.  Her employer, work colleagues, family, friends and school are all very proud of Sinead’s achievement.

Catherine Sheerin -Donnelly

Catherine Sheerin Donnelly, who died recently after a short illness at the age of 66, was born in Bagenalstown.  She was the youngest daughter of the late Thomas and Margaret Donnelly, Dunleckney Manor and spent her childhood in the 17th century stud farm with her seven brothers and sisters. Following her education at Mount Anville she read law. She joined the staff of Arks Advertising where she met her husband, Frank Sheerin and she went on to become one of the leading copywriters in Irish advertising,   She was widely acclaimed for her writing skills and won the National Newspapers of Ireland Grand Prix twice. Outside the world of advertising, Catherine became the first chairperson of Rough Magic Theatre Company, wrote a TV drama Tossed Salad broadcast on RTE, a book The State of Grace published in 2003. President of the Institute of Creative Advertising and Design, Catherine was a food critic for the Sunday Independent and a columnist for Irish Tatler,

She lived in Ranelagh, Dublin but in later years moved, with her husband, to live in Roscrea.  She is deeply mourned by her husband Frank, stepchildren,  brothers Jimmy and John, sisters Anne and Geraldine, sister in law Eileen, nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends.  May she rest in peace.

Bagenalstown Parish Yearbook 2014.

The Parish Year Book is now available in shops    The Year Book is beautifully presented and full of interesting articles and photographs. It would make a lovely gift for local people living away from home. The cost is only €5 per copy.   Due to reduced sales in the past two years a smaller number of copies have been printed this year, so early purchase is advisable. ‘Once they are gone they are gone’.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Bagenalstown St Patrick’s Day Parade Committee held their Annual General Meeting recently in the McGrath Hall. There was a small attendance. The Chairman thanked all members who took part in organising last year’s parade and those who helped out in any way on the day. Sec. Ml. Lakes gave an account of last year’s work in organising the parade held on Sunday. March 16 due to the fact that Mount Leinster Rangers Hurling Club were competing in the All Ireland Club Final in Croke Park on March 17, but next year it will return to St. Patrick’s Day. Treasurer, Brian Sheill, gave a comprehensive report on the financial position and presented an Income and Expenditure Balance Sheet which was circulated to all present. It was noted that the funds for this year are very low and with rising costs the committee will have to depend on fundraising to  maintain the standard of  the parade  Bagenalstown has had up to the present.  .

Officers and Committee for the coming year are as follows.
Chairman Arthur McDonald; Vice Chairman Seamus Somers; Hon Sec. Michael Lakes; Hon. Treasurer Brian Sheill;  PRO Dean Egan.  Committee:  Hughie Hickey, Colette Lakes, Padraig Cahill, Michael Cahill. Anyone who wishes to join the Committee at a later stage will be very welcome, contact any of the above members and you will be notified of the next meeting which will be held in mid January 2015.
Raising money for Defibrillators

To date Nurney Defib. Group has raised €3,900, which was used to purchase two defibrillators. These are now in place in Nurney village and Oldtown crossroads.
