Water Safety Weeks
Congratulations to all the boys and girls who completed different stages in water safety skills up to senior river lifeguard. A total of over 150 children took part and thanks to all the instructors and helpers. Mary Foster would like to thank everyone who gave their services on a voluntary basis, also Bagenalstown Swimmng Pool and examiners. “Safety is very important in Bagenalstown because of the river. This week we taught children to swim in their clothes in the event they might fall into the water, which we hope will never happen.”
Congratulations to Eve Sinnott, Kilree. on winning U/10 Swimmer of the Year. Eve participated in all activities at the pool and greatly improved her swimming and lifesaving skills.
County Championship
Congratulations to the young ladies in St. Mullins Girls Football Club who won the Co. Carlow Junior Football Championship Final in Old Leighlin on Sunday, Aug 22. They beat Ballon on a score of 3.8 to 4 pts. The club was established over ten years ago and this is their second time to win the Championship, 2008 was also a year of victory for them.

Deepest sympathy to Mrs. Maureen Hughes, Conway Park, on the death of her brother John Butler, Jenkinstown, Kilkenny, and to Seamus McDonald, Donore whose mother Sheila McDonald, Cashel, Portlaoise, died last week.

Aware is a voluntary organisation formed in 1985 by a group of interested patients, relatives and mental health professionals, whose aim was to assist that section of the population whose lives are directly affected by depression. 400,000 different people suffer from depression in Ireland at any one time but many hide their condition and never get help. Sadly, over 500 people take their own life each year. Since its foundation in 1985, Aware has been working energetically to bring support to depression sufferers and their families, and to dispel the myths and misunder-standings of this devastating illness.
Family Day
Bagenalstown Family Resource Centre is holding a Family Day on Sunday August 29 at 2 p.m. at their premises at Royal Oak Road. Activities on the day will include barbeque, face painting, wheel of fortune, bottle stall, children’s sport, dog show, etc. There will be a children’s fancy dress competition, cake stall, bouncy castle, lowest score in darts competition.
Adm. €2 per adult, children free.
Fashion Show
Carlow fashion designer, Elaine Curtis, will be supporting
County Carlow Hospice when she presents an Autumn/Winter Fashion Show on Wed. September 8 in the Tower, Dinn Ri, Carlow. The event will start with a drinks reception at 7.30pm followed by the show at 8.30pm. The presenter will be RTE’s Sonia Lennon. Country and Western Night
Woodglade Residents Association is holding a Country and Western them night on Saturday, August 28 from 9pm in The Hunters Rest, Fenagh. Entertainment by Adrian Ryan Band and there are prizes for Best Dressed Cowboy and Cowgirl. There will also be spot prizes and a raffle on the night. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Alzeimer’s Society
The Carlow branch of the Alzeimer’s Society would like to thank all who contributed so generously to their annual collection last week-end. The total amount raised was €1,573.22 and your support is greatly appreciated.
Bagenalstown Area Community Games
Congratulations to the boys and girls that took part in the All Ireland Finals in Athlone recently – the U/10 Football team who brought home gold medals for the second year in a row, the U/12 Soccer team and the U/16 Pitch and Putt team who won silver. Congratulations also to Sarah Fitzpatrick who did so well in the gymnastics event.
Well done to Bagenalstown’s Mixed U/10 Relay team and Liam Murphy (Boys U/12 Ball Throw) who represented Carlow in the All Ireland Athletic Finals on August 21 and 22.
The Mixed U/10 team was narrowly beaten by Kildare, Cavan and Clare who went on to take golf, silver and bronze. The team consisted of Eve Sinnott, Chloe Beck, Shauna O’Neill, Padraig Hynes, Scott Laycock, Cormac Lomax and Sadbh Scully. Both Cormac and Padraig were on the U/10 football club also and won gold two years in a row. Cormac and Padraig also reached the finals of their individual event in Ardattin, where Cormac also took silver.
Eve Sinnott and Shauna O’Neill are also keen footballers, playing on the Girls U/13 St. Andrew’s team. Both are also keen swimmers and both reached the finals in Ardattin. Eve placing in her 200m. Sadbh, Chloe and Scott are also great athletes and footballers. Scott came 5th in the 100m in Ardattin, while Chloe, who is still under age again next year, reached the semi’s in the tough 200m race. Scott also won a silver medal in the 300m in the County Championship during the year. All can be very proud of their achievements.
Liam Murphy came very close in the Final of the Ball Throw. The talent was excellent and Liam proved his strength and determination to finish in the top ten of the best in Ireland. Liam is also eligible for this event next year. He was also part of the U/12 soccer team that won All Ireland silver and he has won many medals over the year in football, soccer, hurling and running.
The Bagenalstown Community Games organisers would like to thank all the parents and coaches who helped out during the year and in Athlone. It has been a great year for Bagenalstown Community Games. This success can only continue.
Courses
Two very useful courses will start in Bagenalstown Family Resource Centre in September. Women’s DIY Home Maintenance Course for Women. You will learn the skills to help maintain and improve your name. The course will include electrics, plumbing, choosing right tools, hanging pictures, tiling, choosing and buying right material and car DIY. The course will be held on Monday morning from 10.30am to 12 noon. DIY Bride. If you are getting married and would like to save money by learning how to do your own invitations, favours, flowers and Mass booklets, you will get all the help you need between 7pm and 10pm starting on September 2.

Yoga and Relaxation Classes
Ballinkillen/Lorum Community Centre Club, in conjunction with Co. Carlow Sports Partnership, is holding six classes of yoga and relaxation, starting on Friday, August 27, from 7.30pm to 9pm in Ballinkillen/Lorum Community Centre.
