in aid of Chernobyl Aid Ireland will take place outside St. Andrew’s Parish Church on Wednesday, Aug 11, between 9am and 12 noon. August Festival
Large crowds turned out to enjoy the music and activities at the Bagenalstown Festival this year.
Swimming Competitions
The one mile swim for The Joe Appleby Memorial Cup took place on Sunday evening and two members of one family came in first and second. The winner was Rebecca Kinsella,
St. Brigid’s Crescent, and her brother Richard came in second. James Lillis, St. Brigid’s Crescent came in third place and Edward Gaynor, Kilree, was fourth. Edward had the fastest time in the race. Mary Foster and Annette Reddy also took part,
This was the first time in four years the swim for the Joe Appleby Cup took place as previous years were cancelled due to floods on the river.
Bernie Brennan, daughter of the late Joe Appleby, Pairc Mhuire, presented the Cup to winner Rebecca Kinsella.
Half Mile Race
Ciara Lillis, 63 St. Brigid’s Crescent, was first home in the ladies half mile race, winning the Corr Shield. The Chicago Cup was claimed by Darragh Doyle, Maple Drive, who won the men’s half mile race.
Quarter Mile Race
Kiri Fisher won the ladies quarter mile race and was presented with the Rose Bowl and the Brown & Crosthwaite Cup was presented to Leon Gordon, Royal Oak who was the winner in the men’s race.
Festival Factor
The Festival Factor Talent Contest was won by a group of young local people “ The Cupid Stunts” and their prize of €500 was donated to St. Lazerian’s House, Bagenalstown. They were also presented with the Festival Factor Cup which they will keep until next year. The band is made up of Eddie Dermody, John Dermody, Christian Dermody, Killian Curran and Johnny Johnson, Junior. Second was Tommy Walsh, whose prize of €300 went to Bagenalstown Branch of Carlow Carlow/Kilkenny Home Care and third prize went to local Town Councillor Paddy Kiely who sang on behalf of the Autism Association.
Photos Exhibition
Large crowds went along to the Estoria Restaurant to see the Photographs Exhibition held over two days. Over 1,000 photographs were on display charting the social history of the town and country areas back through the years. This was organised by Willie Bambrick, Dunleckney, assisted by his wife, Anne. They collected the photos and painstakingly arranged them on poster boards, a job that took time and patience and they are to be congratulated on the wonderful job they did. Willie would like to thank Lisa Healy, Healy’s Pharmacy for her support in printing the photos and the great number of people who supplied the photographs.
There was also great interest in the exhibition of old prints of Bagenalstown showing the streets and areas of interest from over 60 years ago. If you missed them these can be seen on display in the book shop near the Superquin store in Carlow.
As Sunday was a lovely sunny day, there was a constant stream of people waiting to enjoy the barge trips along the river. The Vintage Car Display also attracted a lot of interest
The children were well catered for with a children’s story telling caravan, karting, a puppet show and activities in the Town Park.
Huge crowds came out to enjoy the sunshine and listen to
musical entertainment by Ray Lynam, regarded as one of the finest real country singers ever to come out of Ireland, Richie Kavanagh and Michael Joseph, contestant in the recent RTE programme, Fame.
Arts and Crafts
Alan Gilbert, had a stand at the Festival. Alan and his wife Sue, have been producing finest apple juices and home produce on their six acres of apple orchards in Quinagh, Carlow, Apple Barrel, for the past fifteen years. They will open their farm shop in the Autumn in Quinagh.
Indian handcrafts were on display opposite the Library in Main Street at Sarani Emporium and the display will be open all this week. Michael Hopkins will be happy to show you his beautiful selection of Indian handcrafts.

Flower Exhibition
Flower Power, in conjunction with Carlow Floral Festival, Kilgraney Studio Gallery presents a group show by local artists.

Pilgrimage
Bagenalstown Parish Pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick will take place on Sat. 4 and Sunday 5 September. The bus will leave from outside the Parish Church at 5am on Saturday and the
group will climb Croagh Patrick with Mass celebrated on the top by Fr. Paddy Byrne. There will be an overnight stay in the Park Hotel, Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo with evening meal. After breakfast on Sunday the group will leave and visit Knock for Mass, and leave for home in the afternoon.
