Golden Jubilee

Sr. Clement (Bridie)Murphy, a native of Ratheadon, Bagenalstown, celebrated her Golden Jubilee recently in

the Presentation Convent, in Rawalpindi, in the North Western Frontier Region of Pakistan.

.

Educated by the Presentation Sisters in their secondary school in Bagenalstown Sr. Clement joined the Novitiate at the

young age of 17 years She was professed in Rawalpindi in l960 After her Profession she attended Punjab University and graduated with an M.A. in English. Her first assignments were to schools near Rawalpindi and Peshawer (the capital) in the North West Frontier Province where the students were both Muslim and Christian. This province of Pakistan is bordered on the north and west by Afghanistan and the two countries are separated by a large tribal area with regular incursions into Pakistan by the Taliban.

Some years later she returned to study for her H.Dip in Education in Cork University following which she returned to the Swat Valley in the North West Frontier Province to teach

in a Presentation Convent school there for boys and girls. Today the Swat Valley is under severe pressure as the Taliban strike regularly and among other atrocities they have imposed a ban on the education of girls and hundreds of schools for girls have been shut down.

Sr. Clement has taught in many schools in the North West Frontier Province since going to Pakistan and while she lives and works in a very troubled and dangerous part of the country she has spent fifty happy years in the service of the welcoming and hospitable people of Pakistan.
