Dunleckney Cemetery Memorial Stone
Prior to the recent Annual Cemetery Mass in Dunleckney graveyard a memorial stone to all people who are buried there, was dedicated by Fr. Declan Foley P.P., with the Dunleckney Graveyard Improvement Group among the large attendance present for the occasion. The beautiful memorial stone is situated facing the entrance to the graveyard in front of the church ruins. As part of the cleanup the committee felt that a lasting memorial was appropriate and fitting.
The financial cost of engraving and erecting the stone was obtained by donations and street collections, while the stone was itself donated by Mr. Phil Meaney, Stone Development Ltd. The committee wishes to publicly thank everyone involved for their much appreciated generosity.
The inscription reads 2010 In memory of those buried here, mindful of all, in both marked and unmarked graves. Life, death and resurrection.

Used Clothing Collection
Dochas Nasamu is an Irish registered charity which funds the Dochas Nasamu Orphanage for Children with Aids in Ikumbi outside Nairobi. It is holding a used clothing appeal for ladies, gents and children’s clothing, footwear and household linens i.e. towels, sheets, blankets, etc. The collection will take place on Thursday, July 22, before 12 noon outside Bagenalstown, Newtown and Ballinkillen Church grounds. For further information contact Marie at 087 – 689 0995. This is a genuine Irish charity and it is well worth supporting.
There are at present 60 orphans living in the home, aged 2 to 19 years. Most of the parents of the children have died of AIDS and some of the orphans have been diagnosed as HIV positive. The aim of Dochas Nasamu is to provide adequate food, security, education, clothes, medication and accommodation.
More and more stickers appealing for unwanted clothes are coming through our letter boxes nearly every day of the week, The National Consumer Agency advises people that while the leaflet says that the donations will help needy people in an underdeveloped country, it could be a scam run by a bogus organisation who sells the clothes on for profit. Fake charity leaflets have no address, no registered charity number (CHY) and a mobile phone number which usually doesn’t exist.
These clothes are usually sold in poorer countries such as in Eastern Europe, Russia or Africa and the money is not given to charity. Sometimes the goods are dumped or are sold in car boot sales here in Ireland.
Worst of all, donating items to these scams is affecting collections and fund-raising by legitimate charities such as Oxfam, Barnardos, Enable Ireland and the Irish Cancer Society, which regularly collect door-to-door and rely on public donations to fund their services or stock their shops
To ensure your donations are benefiting real charities, look for the Irish Charity Shops Association logo – a coat-hanger symbol – on collection bags and leaflets
