Mrs. Frances Hogan (Obituary)
Mrs.Frances Hogan, The Harrow Cross, Bagenalstown, died on 31st March in the loving care of the Matron and staff at the District Hospital, Carlow, where she had been a patient for the last four weeks. She was 80 years of age.
Formerly Frances Ryan from Fenagh, she attended Newtown school and then went to work for the Pack Beresford family, Fenagh, Bagenalstown where she spent many happy years. While there she met her husband, Paddy, from neighbouring Rathwade and they were married in June l949.
For a short time they lived in Paddy’s home place in Rathwade before moving to their new home in the Harrow Cross, where they raised their family of 13, sadly reduced to twelve when they lost their young daughter, Frances, at the age of eleven years.
Frances, like most women of her day, worked hard and devoted her life to her husband and family. She was a no-nonsense, straight talking woman with a great sense of humour and she will be remembered as a kind and caring, selfless and unassuming person who touched people’s lives in different ways as a wife, mother, grandmother, great friend and neighbour.
She took pleasure in the simple things in life, her garden and flowers were very important to her and she enjoyed visiting public gardens in the county. She took a great interest when the Harrow Cross was successful in the Carlow County Council Litter League Competition. With her large family, she had very little personal space but she loved reading; Catherine Cookson and Patricia Scanlon were among her favourites and she kept in touch with current affairs by reading a newspaper every day.
She was predeceased by her husband, Paddy, in l992 and her daughter Frances at the age of 11.
Frances’s Funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr. Pierce Murphy, Borris (formerly Parish Priest in Bagenalstown), assisted by Fr. Declan Foley, P.P. and Fr. McEvoy, Tinryland.
She is deeply mourned and missed by her sons: Robert (Rathellen), Anthony (Leighlinbridge), Michael (Leighlinbridge), Patrick (Kernanstown, Carlow), Billy
(Tinryland) and Johnny( Oak Park); daughters Mary Cone (Bagenalstown), Breda Williamson (Ballon), Josephine (Harrow Cross), Patricia (Harrow Cross),Nan Thompson (Carlow) and Geraldine (Bagenalstown); son in law Patrick, also Michael, Larry, Matty and John; daughters in law Kathleen, Mary, Olivia and Anna; sister Mary Elliott (Bedford, UK); grandchildren Ben, Alishia, Natalie, Emmet, Declan, Marie, Alex, Alan, Shane, Paul, Shane, Gareth, Phintan, Clare, Patrick, Kathleen, Billy, Frances, Kellie; nieces, nephews, extended family and many good neighbours and friends.
The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at St. Luke’s Hospital, Kilkenny and the District Hospital, Carlow for their care and kindness to their mother; Fr. Foley, Fr. Byrne and Fr. Pierce Murphy; Dr. Coffey and his team at the Medical Centre, Bagenalstown, their good neighbours and friends. A special word of thanks to her dear friends, Michael and Breda Dermody, for their support and friendship throughout the years.
May she rest in peace.
