Mr. Dan Maher (Obituary)

Mr. Dan Maher, Donore, Bagenalstown, who died recently in St. Lukes Hospital, Kilkenny was a very popular and highly respected member of the local farming community. He was 89 years of age and was predeceased by his wife, Joan, in l973. Dan was a son of Tom and Katie Maher, Donore and was educated locally at St. Joseph’s Academy, Bagenalstown. On leaving school he worked on the family farm, which had been in the Maher family for several generations. A charming and charismatic gentleman, Dan had a light approach to life and was witty and good humoured. He was devoted to his family, particularly his fifteen grandchildren. He was a good listener and was always there for his family and friends. Dan bred greyhounds and was a coursing enthusiast. Last year, due to illness, was the first year he missed the annual Fenagh coursing event.

He won many races with his greyhounds in Kilkenny and Enniscorthy through the years. His Funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr. Declan Foley, C.C. Bagenalstown following which he was laid to rest in Ballinkillen Cemetery. Dan is mourned and sadly missed by his sons Danny (Donore), Thomas (Dublin) and Jim (Kansas); daughters Mrs. Siobhan McGovern (Kilkenny), Mrs. Teresa Cunningham (Donore), Mrs Vera Dowling (Kilkenny) daughters-in-law Mary, Mary, Treacy and sons-in-law Keenan and Pat; grandchildren Joanne, Edel, Thomas, Fionnuala, Fiachra, Cathal, Ashling, Orla, Conor, Ciaran, Fiona, Denise, Sean and Mark, Colin and Gabriel and a wide circle of good neighbours and friends The community will be lonelier for his passing.
